Music Curriculum Intent

Music is a highly creative subject that provides enjoyment in many forms and has a positive impact on wellbeing.  We want our pupils to develop a love of music and to experience a wide range of musical works so that they are inspired to develop their own musical knowledge and skills.

Pupils achieve through developing their skills and knowledge within the music curriculum.  This includes listening, evaluating, performing and composing.  Pupils understand how music is created and the different elements within a piece of music: pitch, dynamics, tempo and musical notation.

Our pupils are taught to understand that creating music and playing a musical instrument are complex skills with many elements that require commitment and perseverance to achieve

Playing in an orchestra or singing as part of a choir requires a collective effort that teaches children that they have a responsibility as part of this.  Listening to and appreciating music composed and performed by others should be done responsibility in order to fully appreciate the work.

We want our pupils to gain a love of music and aspire to have music as part of their everyday lives – for enjoyment, as a hobby or as a professional musician.

Our Music Scheme of Work is taken from the published scheme ‘Music Express’. Music Express provides teaching activities that are imaginative, inspiring and fun. It has been written especially for classroom teachers and is

  • user-friendly
  • well planned
  • fully resourced, and
  • no music reading is required.

Music Express fulfils the requirements of the Music National Curriculum of England.

Learning with Music Express, children will gain a broad and balanced musical education. They will

  • learn about and sing songs from around the world including the British Isles
  • learn about music from different periods and genres
  • enjoy music lessons with a balance of listening, composing, performing and appraising.

A steady progression plan has been built into Music Express, both within each book and from one year to the next, ensuring consistent musical development. Each unit is divided into six, weekly lessons, which are intended to be taught over a half term.
